Last week, I was lucky enough to be able to attend The Europas evening event at Here East, in London’s Olympic Park, as part of the fantastic London Tech Week. The evening made for a really interesting and exciting mixture of talks, speeches, a delicious dinner, and a prestigious awards ceremony.
The evening began with drinks on the rooftop terrace at Here East – in 2012 the former Olympic Press Centre – which overlooked the Olympic Park and the majestic Olympic Stadium itself. This inspirational backdrop of post-modern grandeur made for the ideal place for casual networking over champaign before the evening event itself began; and I was able to meet Tech North’s Martin Bryant, who I’d chatted with many times over Twitter and read countless articles from, so it was great to put a face to the words.
The event opened with Mike Butcher proclaiming ‘FUCK BREXIT’, after taking us through the highs and lows of the past year for himself and for the technology world from his perspective, before the arrival of a delicious dinner.
After the eating had finished, the award presentation began. Perhaps the most interesting shorlistees and winners of the evening were WeFarm, who won the impressive best impact award for their truly society-improving communications tool for rural African farmers, magical musical AI platform Jukedeck, and the amazingly disruptive, genuinely clever, what3words.
Overall, a fantastic evening with some truly inspirational figures and companies; both winning and as shortlistees for the awards. Congratulations to everybody involved, and thanks again to Mike Butcher for giving me the opportunity to attend.
